The problem
Git workflows in active repositories become hard to track through terminal output alone: branch relationships get obscured, file-by-file code review before submitting a pull request lacks dedicated UI, and resolving multi-file merge conflicts on the command line is error-prone.
The solution
An application and companion product website. The desktop client provides a visual commit graph with colour-coded lanes, a dedicated review window for inspecting diffs before or during pull requests, interactive rebase, and a 3-pane merge tool for conflict resolution. The companion website provides documentation, feature tours, and release distribution for Windows users.
Technical implementation
Total Git pairs a high-performance Windows desktop application with a dedicated product website, designed for developers who want visual clarity over complex git workflows without leaving their desktop environment.
Desktop application
The desktop client targets the daily friction points of branching, code review, and conflict resolution:
- Visual commit graph: Coloured branch lanes, author avatars, branch tags on dedicated lines, and folded commit sequences for scanning repository history.
- Dedicated code review: A separate review window with file trees, review status tracking synchronized with GitHub, diff inspection, and local branch comparisons before opening a pull request.
- Three-pane merge tool: Direct visual conflict resolution showing base, local, and remote changes side by side with integrated resolution controls.
- Interactive rebase and branch management: Visual rebase controls, squash selections, and branch grouping based on naming conventions.
- Tabs and worktrees: Multiple repositories and worktrees organised in coloured tabs with saved workspaces.
Product website and distribution
The accompanying website at totalgit.e-path.co.uk serves as the product’s public home:
- Feature tour and interactive documentation: Visual walkthroughs explaining review workflows, conflict resolution, and keyboard-driven navigation.
- Self-updating release delivery: Packaged installer distribution integrated with GitHub releases and automated update feeds.
- Zero-runtime overhead: Lightweight static architecture ensuring immediate page loads and accessibility compliance.
Outcome
Live at totalgit.e-path.co.uk with releases distributed directly for Windows.
